"Why," you ask? Because we want profile pages to have freedom of customization, but also to have some consistency. This way, when anyone visits a deviant, they know they can always find the art in the top left, and personal info in the top right.
Don't forget, restraints can bring out the creativity in you!
Now go forth and astound us all with your devious profiles!
First you gotta either make a avatar that is 50x50 pixels or get a premade one. (just search dA for 'free horse avatar' or 'free orange juice avatar' or whatever you're into, or try to find someone who makes them)
Then go to dA and in the upper-left corner of the screen you'll see your username. Click the little triangle next to it and a menu will pop down. Click "Edit Settings" on the menu. On the left will be another menu. Under Public, click "Identity". The first thing under Identity should be your Avatar. Click the button that says Avatar, upload one you've saved to your computer, and voilà! A shiny new avatar.
